How should we give in charity?

I have come across many charities that focus more on humanitarian efforts i.e. providing food and shelter. However, this in and of itself is not enough to solve the issues that our brothers and sisters face across the world. Many of us feel that once we donate, we have played our role and that’s it. This way of thinking is disingenuous. Money alone will not solve our problems. Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to water down the work done by these Islamic charities, wallahi they are all doing amazing jobs but charities alone wont solve issues.

Is money the solution to our problems?

The west is based on capitalism, causing a lot of poisonous mind-sets to infiltrate into the Muslims. Society encourages the idea of becoming rich. In our religion, being rich is encouraged also, but it depends on the route taken to obtain that money. It’s never worth it if it causes you to sacrifice your religion in any way shape or form. However, it is this very concept that has caused some people to abandon everything, including their education and their families.

How is the Qur’an relevant to me and what should I do?

How many of us actually read the Quran on a day-to-day basis, even if it’s just a single ayah? It is obvious why muslims are so disunited and are always being bullied by the media. For many of us, our only concern is attaining wealth in this dunya. The Qur’an, what is meant to be our guide, is left on our bookshelves to collect dust, never for us to open and reflect. There was a very powerful statement made by one of my teachers: ‘If you find dust on your copy of the Qur’an, then know that the dust which is covering your heart is greater.’
